Dublin Event Guide 965: Spring Takes Break Connect Multicultural Festival, Culture Date with Dublin 8, Phizzfest

Spring Takes Break

Connect Multicultural Festival, Culture Date with Dublin 8, Phizzfest

Hi!!

It’s the beginning of May and by now the outdoor event season in Dublin should really be in full swing. And to be fair, we had a few promising days that suggested exactly that. But just as quickly, things have cooled down again and the rain is making a return this weekend. So maybe we are not quite there yet!?

I’m still away for a little while and not fully plugged into EVERYTHING that is happening on the ground in Dublin, but I still know where to find all the free events and therefore the Dublin Event Guide is back to normal again. Even if I am a few thousand kilometres away while putting this together.

The weather might not be playing along perfectly, but that has never really stopped Dublin before. Outdoor plans might need a bit of flexibility and indoor options suddenly look a lot more attractive again, but there is still plenty happening across the city.

So May has started, the season is trying to get going and the events are there either way. Let’s see what Dublin has to offer this week.

P.S.: If someone in our Dublin Event Guide community has some influence in the Irish Immigration Service, please let me know. I need a bit of help. Nothing toooo complicated. Even just some information would help.

If you have friends or family or colleagues that also enjoy cultural events in Dublin, let them know that they can sign up for the free weekly Dublin Event Guide newsletter at https://getthislink.com/DEGSignup

The working title for my video series on YouTube is the “Better You” videos, they are all about 5-7 minute long about how to better your life. Check out this video series if you want to achieve more in life, but are talking yourself out of it. https://www.youtube.com/@JoergSteegmueller

Donations in May:
EUR 56

(By the end of the month, this number has to reach or exceed EUR 200 to guarantee the continuation of the Dublin Event Guide.)

If the Dublin Event Guide helps you to find out about free events in Dublin, please help with a donation.

The counter here shows the current donation status. By the end of the month EUR 200 will be subtracted to pay the bills. If more money has been donated, the rest will be carried forward. If donations have stopped below the EUR 200, the missing amount will be carried over.

Last week the wonderful people that helped with important donations were Kieran, Mark, Dolores and Linda. Thanks a lot! Everybody’s help is welcome and appreciated AND needed!

Keeping the Dublin Event Guide going is quite low cost at just EUR 200 per month, but I need you to help getting the money together to cover the cost. Without that there will be no Dublin Event Guide!

With the above counter you know at all times where we stand and when donating is needed. Donations keep the Dublin Event Guide alive and all donors will also get some additional bonuses.

Here are some more details about donations:
Any amount is appreciated, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. – That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that Euro! If your funds are limited, but you still want to help, you can buy a virtual coffee for just EUR 4. All donations will be used in full for the Dublin Event Guide.

To donate, use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here: https://gturl.eu/DEGdonate. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. You can even sign up for a yearly subscription on the donation page! Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and are therefore very much appreciated! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

In case the donation page doesn’t work for you, the old links are here: You can donate via http://www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you, just use @joergbrb or now also https://revolut.me/joergbrb
(If possible, please send your full name and e-mail address as a message with the payment via PayPal or Revolut so that I can tell you about bonuses for donors when available.)

To buy one or two or even three virtual coffees for the Dublin Event Guide, come to the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here https://www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

And there is one other way to help and it is even free: If you come to http://www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

And there is more…

?+++ Dublin City Half Marathon
The Dublin City Half Marathon will take place on Sunday 03 May. The run will start at 08:30 in O’Connell Street at the Gresham Hotel and will finish after 21.1km in Guild Street in the IFSC. The route map can be downloaded on this page https://dublincityhalfmarathon.ie/course/ The run will finish at 12:00, but expect rolling road closures along the race route until 14:30. Exact locations and times are one the website above. There will be 13,200 participants, so expect a very busy city centre. The event is not free and it is fully sold out, but you are invited to cheer on the runners. Good luck to all participants!

?+++ Culture Date with Dublin 8
The Culture Date with Dublin 8 celebrates the rich cultural, historical and architectural heritage of Dublin 8 from 04-10 May with lots of free events. https://www.culturedatewithdublin8.ie/ I included a good few events in the listings above, but there are more, so check out the website.

+++ Phizzfest
The 2026 edition of Phizzfest in Phibsborough will run from Friday 08 May until Sunday 10 May. All details can be found at https://phizzfest.ie/ Lots of events are already booked out, so check as soon as possible to see if there is something that interests you that has still availability.

?+++ Wilde Stages Festival
The International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival is now called “Wilde Stages” or “Wilde Stages, Dublin’s Queer Theatre Festival”. I am not so sure about the new name. The old name was a mouth full, but the new name is not much better and the short form doesn’t get the message across. To add to the confusion, the website is https://gaytheatre.ie
The festival will have lots of shows, but I only found one free event on 15 May. It is a panel discussion “Queer Theatre: Is there any need for it?” https://gaytheatre.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/873685079 (Booking required)

? +++ Bealtaine Festival – The awkward art of naming age
Every May, Age & Opportunity runs the “Bealtaine Festival, Ireland’s national festival celebrating the arts and ageing” as it is called this year. And if you are interested in events for a while you might have seen other tag lines: “celebrating creativity in older age”, “celebrating creativity as we age” or “celebrating arts and creativity as we age” and now “celebrating the arts and ageing”.

At first glance, this constant re-naming looks odd. As if they don’t know what they want to be. But Bealtaine has a genuinely difficult job.
The festival is aimed at older people, with recent material referring to those aged 50+. But how many 50 or 55 year olds would happily describe themselves as “old” or even “seniors”? Even “older people” feels wrong when applied to someone who is still in the middle of life, working, running a business, raising teenagers, playing sport or starting new projects.

That is the trap! Say “seniors” and you risk making half your audience feel twenty years older. Say “older people” and some will quietly decide it is not for them. Say “as we age” and it sounds warmer, but also pretty vague. Say “arts and ageing” and it becomes policy-friendly, but less human.

So yes, the constant renaming is slightly ridiculous. But it also reveals something real: once age is involved, language becomes a minefield. We want to acknowledge later life without reducing people to it. We want to celebrate ageing without making it sound like a condition. And we want to invite people in without first putting a label on their forehead.
So, I have a suggestion! Let’s call it “Bealtaine – Arts, Creativity and Life Experience Festival … for people who are not done yet”. ;-)
What do you think? Does this new name “have legs”? Is it a runner?

The Festival runs all May, but for the first year with a stronger focus on the last weekend of May. Another change is that for the first year it seems that there are a LOT less free events than in previous years. So I will let you look for the events. The full event brochure is at https://bealtaine.ie/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/UPDATED-BEALTAINE-BROCHURE-22.04.26.pdf and unfortunately the website (https://bealtaine.ie) does not list the events in any other way.

+++ Dublin Castle Closed until January
From 05 May, Dublin Castle, Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction will be closed because of the EU Presidency until 31 December 2026. Since Dublin Castle is an active government site/venue, it is sort of understandable that they close the doors. But for 8 months? :-o https://dublincastle.ie/

?+++ Government Digital Wallet: Share your Views
The Irish Government is currently exploring the idea of introducing a “Government Digital Wallet”, a system/app that could allow people to store official documents like ID, licences and possibly other credentials on their phone.
On the surface, this sounds convenient. Many countries are moving in this direction and having your documents available digitally could make everyday interactions a little bit smoother, from dealing with public services to verifying your identity when needed.
However, given Ireland’s mixed track record with digital identity systems, caution is required.
The rollout of the Public Services Card led to significant concerns raised by the Data Protection Commission, particularly around how personal data was collected and used. That history means that trust in new systems like a digital wallet should not come automatically.
The government has opened a public consultation and is actively asking for feedback.
